Making complex clinical research easier to manage

PBK Kopernik connects study planning with the day-to-day work of research teams and participants. We designed and delivered a platform that helps coordinate studies across research centres and brings participant-reported data into the research workflow.

What we delivered?

We built a platform that translates complex study plans into coordinated work across research centres. Flexible schedules and questionnaires give teams a consistent framework for visits and data collection. Participants complete their assigned questionnaires within the application and receive reminders, while research teams collect their responses in a structured form. Controlled access and protected medical-image transfers support collaboration around sensitive research data.

We also built a separate public information portal where the centre can publish news and educational materials about clinical trials for patients. Its trial search helps people find studies run by the centre and explore opportunities to access experimental treatments based on the latest advances in medical science.

Technology stack

A Java/Spring Boot backend with PostgreSQL serves React and Next.js interfaces. SurveyJS provides a visual questionnaire builder. Study information imported from the hospital’s research system is made available through an HL7 FHIR API. login.gov.pl (Poland’s national electronic identification service) supports verified sign-in, while a dedicated service handles protected medical image transfers. A separate WordPress portal retrieves study information through the application’s API for its public trial search.

What problem we solved?

Running clinical trials across multiple centres requires a common study framework and close coordination of enrolment, visits, questionnaires and medical documentation. Information must be shared under precise access rules: local teams need full details about their own participants, while the coordinating centre receives pseudonymised research data. Medical images contain sensitive health data and require protection during transfer and storage.
